Fed EX delivered my 12x36 lathe today. Now I just have to get it set up.So far I think I'm really going to like it . It's is a little bit heavier than I thought and I think my engine hoist is too light ,will have to go to plan B. Which will probably be to rent a bigger hoist. But it's here and it looks great and I can't wait to get it set up. Thanks Don! If it runs has good as it looks it will keep me busy for a long time.

Got the lathe setup and made a small pile of chips. Everything looks good so far. Going to have to get a quick change tool holder though. Thinking maybe the AXA . I would still have the four way which is really to big for 1/2 " tools that I have.. Anyone know the size of tools that work best in the AXA and the BXA . I'm open to any ideas.

I have 2 12x36 lathes, and use an Aloris AXA on both. A 12x36 could use either an AXA or BXA, although most everyone uses the AXA size because the tool holders are less expensive, and that size toolpost is well suited for our size lathe.
Glad to hear you are doing well with your new machine. I'm curious about how noisy the gear head is. Every lathe I've ever owned has been belt driven. I understand the gear head lathes are quite noisy in comparison. Do you have experience with both, and can you give a comparison of how noisy each is? Thanks in advance

| Sorry I've never been around belt driven lathes. I guess I'm use to a noisy shop and I don't think it's that noisy but compared to a belt lathe I really can't say.

I just finished acouple of barrels for a Savage 110 action . I have to say I like my new 12x36 Lathe, wish I had bought it afew year ago.
Don what would be a good carbide bit tool holder for fine thread 60 degree threads?I used a HSS tool for the Savage barrels which are 1.055"x 20.I would like to get a carbide tool if I could.
