Hello-
New guy here...Chris B....I feel lucky to live in such an awesome spot in MI, so close to so many places that support our hobby (Just a few miles from you guys). Anyway....
I am finally able to move into the heavy machinery in equipping my shop, a corner of the basement in my Detroit area home. First up will be the Lathe. I'd love a 12x36, as I think it would be great for what I want to do (gunsmithing type stuff) with its larger spindle bore and low speed, but there isn't anyway I am getting a half ton of Lathe down my back steps into my basement. I think the 11x26 MIGHT be a pretty good compromise over the small mini-lathe size stuff that is just too small for the projects I have in mind.
So my basic question is this:
Can the 11x26 be broken down into small enough pieces that I would be able to take the main bed and motor portion down the stairs with a dolly by myself? The tricky part is that the basement stairs are not a strait shot in from the back door. The is a small foyer and a 90 deg turn to navigate. I could easily lug a 75 lb chunk down with my hands, but how heavy would this main portion be after removing the tailstock, carriage, chuck, whatelse??
Chris,
Welcome to the forum!
You might not need to disassemble, call a couple tool rentals, they have a power dolly, it's like a refer dolly, but has a power lift, some even have a lift plate to pick the machine up and put it on the stand.
there is a rental yard in Royal Oak that has them IIRC...
