Hello. I want to learn to turn barrels for AR15's. Nothing for benchrest accuracy but some pistol calibers & others I want. It is so expensive to get brls done that I would like to learn to "roll" my own. I am looking at the 11" x 26" Lathe With Stand. I would like to know were the best place to post with these types of Q's Thanks in advance. Ron

Hi Ron,
Welcome to the forum! You have posted in the right place, The 11 x 26 would get the job done, and is a good starter machine, but personaly I would step up to a 12" x 24" or 12" x 36", you get a better selection of threads you can cut and a heavier CI bed machine, which will lead to a better finish product with less effort on your part, and the heavier machines are better suited to being used to mill with.
But then again, my job is to sell machines, and I would rather sell you a lathe you might "grow out of" in 20 years, then one you will grow out of in 2-3 years.

I dont see the 12x24 but I think the 11x26 will work. The only thing I see is the spindle hole is 1" Some of the barrels I would start with may be that large. Can the spindle be changed out for a larger one? I also will need to get a cooling fluid set up. Will there be any issues with the bed getting wet? I am trying to find someone to fill me in on the specifics of what I will need. Thanks for you input! Ron

The 11 x 26 has a 1-3/4-8 mount, I doubt you can open it up much more than 1" safely. and the vendor does not offer anything else.
To set it up for flood coolant, I don't se any problem other than putting splash protection on the motor. you will need a tank, pump, and a nozzle, we have a nice tank/pump set up: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/5767
you will also need a nozzle, a mag base one like this is handy, as you can move it out of the way when you need to: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/5688
here is a link to the 12 x 24: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/14774
The 12 x 36: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/14775

Thanks Don. Were would be the best place to see how to set up bits & what bit to do the turning? I have never run a lathe before & im not much of a reader. I am a hands on person & find learning machinery/ fixing things comes relatively easy. Pics are best but any info is apreciated. Thanks,Ron

Hi Ron,
The virtual machine shop has some good info,
http://www.jjjtrain.com/vms/index.html
One of the best resourses I have is a book, machine shop practice volume 1
(for lathe work volume 1, for mill, volume 2)
Voulme 1: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/18690
Volume 2: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/18691
Both books are well written, with pictures.
The was a guy over on the Gunbroker.com forum that was offering a model maker / tool maker class, here is a link to the post at GB:

OK Don. How do I get the 11x26 lathe setup. Do you guys deliver it & set it on the stand or do I need to get a forklift? Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron,
Sorry, we do not have any set up services, but we do offer advise! Where are you located? sometimes it is better to pick it up from one of our branch locations. If you need truck shipment, we suggest you pick it up at the delivery terminal, for that machine, a small pick up truck or a small trailer is all you need, and the freight terminal will load it for you, this means that the machine is at your door when you want it, and you can have all your buds there to help unload, way better than waiting all day for a semi to pull up (and sometimes cheaper).
Next would be where do you want to set up? is it a "grade level" shop (garage) or in a basement?

What does it run to have a truck deliver it? I am in Palmetto & I know there is a store in Tampa.  Does it break down any to make it a little less trouble? 825lbs, How much does the base weigh? Sorry for all the Qs. I need to get a floating pilot reamer holder for it also along with the bits I will need. What does it come with?  I ill get the info I need & try to place the order next week. Thanks, Ron

Ron,
Freight to you is estiamted at $189.20, this is to a residence with a lift gate.
It comes in a crate with 2 boxes, it should be on a pallet.

Don. I am going with the 11x26 lathe. Could you tell me what tool bits I will need that will work with this lathe. I am more concerned about the tool size that will work. I will be turning barrels & cutting threads. I will also need a cutoff bit. From there I will be able to pick the other bits I may want.  Thanks for all your help on this. Ron

Hi Ron,
I would start with this set:
http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/12654
It has a few of each of the most common standard CT tool bits.
To set up for a cut-off tool you will need to fabricate a holder, start with a 19-s holder like this: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/14243 or in a set with 3 blades: http://www.wttool.com/product-exec/product_id/14266
and either screw or weld a dog on the back side to clamp into the tool post, I would attach the dog so the bit is a little low, and shim to - center.

Don, I got the 11x27 lathe & I have an issue with the inch threads. I want 16" & to get them I have to run the 1.60MM threads. Tried to run the 24" threads & they are also a little short. Is there an issue with this lathe? Just not geting the exact " threads. Its not off by much but it is causing the bolt to bind. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Ron

Hi Ron,
We have had no problems with thread cutting that I know of.
I do not have one of those machines here, so all I have to go by is the manual.
There are 2 different change gear scenarios, depending on which lead screw you have.
Figure 22 on page 9 shows the arrangement for a inch lead screw.
Figure 26 on page 10 shows the arrangement for a metric lead screw.

The one on the bottom is the one I have. I know I have the gears in the right place. What would cause all threads to be a little short? Seems odd that on the 1.6MM gears/setting I can get perfect 16" threads. Also the 1.6mm setup = 18" threads! Half nut seems to be the logical place but could it be out from the factory. Can this be adjusted to corect this problem. I will cut some more test runs but seems like a waist of time until I can get it to cut true 16" threads with the 16"thread gears. Any help would be greatly apreciated, Ron

P.S. Just found out that I can get 24" threads seting up on 23" threads! This is unreal. What can I do?

What got me was the 120 gear on the outside. I figured they wanted it on there for a reason so I used it. The more I look at the pick, it does show it on the inside. Thanks again. Ron

Ron,
The 120 is on the outside, but out of the gear train, I think you have to have 1 on there to act as a "spacer". the only mesh in the change gears is 45~127~40

It looks like we will be getting some collet chucks! IIRC, it is a 5" x 5C, we won't see them fro several months though....
