Whitworth threads ?  Rate Topic

I've been kicking around this 68 Thunderbolt, looking for parts to restore it.
There may be some small parts I may need to make and they require cutting
whitworth threads. To get to the point, Don maybe you could help me out with this, does anyone know if the WT 920 can cut whitworth threads? Also I think someone asked where I live ? I grew up walking distance from the birthplace of Henry Ford and now reside a little bit down the road from there... Dearborn.
History states that Henry's Father was quite the machinest for his time so I guess I've better pick up the hobbie for traditions sake. ;)
I moved this to ask the experts

If the 920 will cut the required tpi and you can grind a Whitworth pattern threading tool, you should be in business.

Hi,    Whitworth threading is same procedure as other single point threading on lathe. The real challenge is getting the 55 degree angle on cutting bit w/ample relief for right or left cutting  &  w/radius of .1373 on bottom & top of threads.   Tops can usually knocked off with thin file very carefully. Bottom filet must be accurate as possible or threads will bind.  I would suggest to use drill bit  or thread gauge rods if you have access to them.  Happy turning   40yrs UK sport car repair

I have an old british car wich uses whitorth. The only difference I've seen is the shape of the thread. Pitch is the same. In my case, It was easier to replace the fasteners with ase fine. but originallity did'nt matter so much to me when it came to the engine parts. I've also seen whitworth stuff at Chronos tool company and on ebay if you realy can't get the 920 to co-ooperate, but I don't think that will be an issue.:cool:

Eddie, Thanks for the info. You said basically what metalist2 said. The trick is
grinding the tool bit to the correct shape. I haven't cut any threads as of yet with the cold weather and all but, sometime this summer I may have to give it a try ! Thanks for your input. Don.
