Don,  I have this posted on other boards so I thought I would add it here since I used the mill and lathe I bought from you along with an old surface grinder I picked up and belt sander.

First I want to say that I got the basic design for this project from a magazine article.  At the present I can't seen to find it. If anyone recoginize's this please let me know who it was so I can give credit.   I used Corel Draw to scale it so that I could use the stock I had on hand.

Here is a shot of all the parts:

Here it is assembled and with the first test piece.

I still want to add gearing, and make grooves for rolling round stock.  First test piece came out good enough for me.  It is 1/8" x 1" rolled into a 3" circle.  1/8" is probably about the heaviest stock I will be able to roll.  The frame sides are 1/2" thick and the two pinch rolls are 1" drill rod.  The 3rd roll was 1" that I turned down to .812.

Wow! That is awesome! What is the smallest ring size it can make? You should post plans! Or sell them or something. :)

That's pretty great.  I know a guy that makes custom fences and gates.. He's been looking for something like that for a while know.  If you can, post the plans.

Randoma,  here is a link to the plans that gave me the idea.  All I did was change some dimensions to fit the materials I had on hand.

I am really not sure how small I can go with it.  Once this shoulder gets healed up I will try some more rings.

Nice job! I printed the text from the link you provided, and printed your pictures. If I may ask, what kind of steel did you use? It looks like better stuff than just the CRS that I usually get stuck working with. Thanks in advance

Corm thanks, the frame was 1018 hot rolled and the rollers are 1" od drill rod.  I ran the side frames and clamps through my surface grinder for a final operation.

Deere-guy:  This is from an article in the February 1966 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine; article author: Manly Banister;  Page 190.  Since this was a copy-righted magazine/article you may have to write/contact Popular Mechanics for permission to reprint.  Since you resized the dimensions and actually changed the drawing, it is not really the the same plans, so permission may not even be necessary.  The only certain thing is yours is similar to the PM one, but not the same.  Who knows about all the copyright mumbo-jumbo?

Mrfixit,  I am not hosting the plans,  I have no clue who owns that website the plans are on.

What you built seems exactly like what I need, but I'm not a metalsmith.  I am currently having metal made into stool footrests for the furniture I make, but I'd like to roll my own.  My bands are 3/16 x 1-1/2 with diameters between 16 inches and 21 inches, with a 2 inch overlap which I fasten with a bolt at one of the legs.  I use a punch to pre-punch the holes before bending.  You can see what I'm talking about at http://www.barnhouseproducts.com.  Have you improved this roller since you posted this, and could I buy one from you?  I'm assuming it would do 3/16" metal although you say its capacity is 1/8.

I've looked at that machine.  It says the capacity is 1" x 3/16.  I'm reluctant to use a machine that's too narrow for my stock and right at the capacity for the thickness.  I've purchased other tools to use at their capacity and haven't been happy.  Thanks for the suggestion.
